The Canadian women’s team overcame a 0-2 deficit on Thursday in Fukuoka to defeat Japan in 5 rounds in the Nations League, the last chance tournament for Olympic qualification.

Calgary native Alexa Gray led Canada’s attack with 30 points in the important 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 16-14 victory that leaves the team in good position to go to the Paris Games.

British Columbian Kiera Van Ryk contributed 27 points, while Sarina Koga was the most productive of the Japanese with 20 points.

The match was extremely close as evidenced by the total points at 68-67 for Canada, the tie 6-6 in terms of aces, as well as the fouls at 26-24 against the Canadians who had the upper hand 13- 6 when it comes to defensive counterattacks.

Canada’s next match against the Netherlands will be crucial. The Dutch, ranked 9th in the world, currently hold the last pass to the Olympics.

Canada, 10th, is slightly behind by 2.09 points. The team will complete its tournament on Sunday by facing France (No. 20), while the Netherlands will play South Korea (No. 34).

The Canadians lost the first match of this tournament on Tuesday; a defeat in three sets against Italy.
