Around ten students from the Rehaincourt primary school in the Vosges suffered slight illnesses this Thursday, June 27, announced the department prefecture. A major emergency response system was deployed.

“Around ten students from the Jeunes Chênes primary school in Rehaincourt suffered slight illnesses”announced this Thursday, June 27, 2024, the Vosges prefecture in a press release.

According to our information, 125 students and a dozen school staff were confined in the establishment as a precaution, while the doubts were resolved. Around forty firefighters were mobilized, as well as chemical specialists, Samu doctors and police. They were alerted for discomfort, following a suspicious smell, a little before 10 a.m.

In a situation update around 12:45 p.m., the prefecture specifies that “the consultations carried out by the doctors on the students removed any suspicion of intoxication. The children were able to leave with their parents”. Nine children were still taken to the hospital for a final opinion from a pediatrician.

The Vosges prefect took charge of the relief operations. A departmental operational center was opened. It brought together the different state services, “in order to coordinate the actions of the various actors involved in the field to quickly determine the origin of the discomfort”specifies the prefecture.

In another situation update, published around 2 p.m., the prefecture indicates that the origin of the fumes comes from a company near the school. “The origin of these inconveniences is attributed to fumes coming from the Grandidier company which collects waste to be treated”, specifies the prefecture.

Materials that are apparently harmless and do not pose a concern for public health

David Percheron, secretary general of the Vosges prefecture

This company specializes in waste treatment. It is located a few hundred meters from the school. She received a barrel and it was when she opened it that the smell spread. No company personnel were inconvenienced, nor the village population.

“It would seem that a causal link can be made with the company which is located above and which was downwind. It is a company which processes waste. It treated a drum and the latter would have caused a emanation. No worries at this stage These are apparently harmless materials and do not pose a concern for public health. However, as a matter of prudence and precaution, the Samu doctors and firefighters have been deployed.explains David Percheron, secretary general of the Vosges prefecture, at the microphone of France 3 Lorraine.

The RD6 was partly closed, coming from Moriville, for the purposes of relief operations.
