Who shows up, who says stop? The mayors of South- are thinking about the municipal elections of 2026

DIt's difficult to plan locally when you change Prime Minister or MPs every four mornings. And yet, the next municipal elections are scheduled for March 2026. Barring a new political earthquake, a pandemic or an upheaval in the electoral calendar, the new municipal councils will be installed in just fourteen months.

“Sud Ouest” questioned the 200 mayors of Sud- and Entre-deux-Mers before Christmas. A simple question: “Are you going to run again in the next municipal elections?” Yes ? No ? Don't speak out? » 17% of elected officials questioned could not be reached or did not answer our question, 50% did not wish to comment for the moment, 13% will return their scarf at the end of the mandate and 20% want to represent themselves.

1 They represent themselves

In this list of mayors who are still motivated, one figure stands out: the mayor of the Langon sub-prefecture Jérôme Guillem. The elected official is also president of the South-Gironde Community of Communes and regional councilor. “I always said that I would run again,” says the fifty-year-old.

Other mayors don't beat around the bush. This is the case, among others, of Philippe Camon-Golya (Auros), Daniel Barbe (Blasimon and CdC Rurales de l’Entre-deux-Mers), Jérémie Gaillard (Caudrot), Philippe Moutier (Gironde-sur-Dropt) , Dominique Claverie (Martillac), Francis Zaghet (Pondaurat and CdC du Réolais) and Christophe Miqueu (Sauveterre-de-Guyenne).

2 They stop

“Make room for young people”, “I no longer correspond to my times”, etc. Twenty-six mayors of the sector have already announced their political retirement. A significant number that questions. The mandate of mayor is particularly demanding. “The telephone is ringing day and night, the people being administered are more and more vindictive, the meetings are multiplying. The State and the Department are abandoning us,” complains a mayor of Entre-deux-Mers.

The list of mayors who will throw in the towel should swell in the coming months. Among those who say “stop”: Christian Tamarelle (mayor of Saint-Médard-d'Eyrans since 1997), Jacqueline Lartigue-Renouil (anti-LGV in Bernos-Beaulac), Jocelyn Doré (Cadillac and CdC Convergence-Garonne), Jean -Marc Pelletant (Landiras), Jean-François Tauzin (four mandates in Roaillan), Christian Malandit-Sallaud (Saint-Michel-de-Lapujade and Ustom).

3 They remain silent

The majority of elected officials prefer not to comment. “It’s premature,” they reply. Some are still undecided. Others do not want to announce their package too early so as not to demobilize the troops. And there are those who are waiting for the right moment to announce their candidacy.

Even if nothing is official, Isabelle Dexpert in Bazas and Bruno Marty in La Réole will be there at 99%. There are fewer certainties in La Brède. To passers-by who question him, Michel Dufranc (mayor since 1995) has consistently responded for several months: “I don’t yet know what I am going to do. »

Will Michel Dufranc, mayor of La Brède since 1995, go back for a spin?
