Founded in 1980 by a team of residents from Verdelais and Saint-Maixant (Gironde), the Verdelais Holiday and Leisure Center continues to broaden its impact and surprise with its dynamism. The Chalets de Lesponne project, initiated the same year, aimed to offer everyone access to holidays in the Pyrenees, at affordable prices. Forty-five years later, this ideal is still alive and based on a unique model, managed exclusively by committed volunteers.
A project still active
The Chalets de Lesponne continue to be maintained and improved thanks to teams who regularly visit the site to carry out renovation and modernization work.
During the general assembly in January 2024, new life was given to the project with the launch of the “Four Seasons of Lesponne”, in partnership with the CVLV Pôle Social Rural.
This program made it possible to organize five one-week stays during each vacation period, allowing 75 local children and young people to enjoy the mountains. At the same time, weekends for families, BAFA training courses linked to the UFCV, artist residencies and various associative projects were hosted on the site.
Renovated and adapted chalets
In 2024, the Grand Chalet benefited from major renovations. Initially designed to accommodate groups, it has been redeveloped to meet the needs of families.
A new room, the “Chambre du Chiroulet”, was created, the dormitories were redesigned, and the toilets and the collective kitchen were modernized.
A new price scale, based on family coefficients, guarantees more equitable and affordable access to these infrastructures. With capacities ranging from 4 to 35 people, the Chalets de Lesponne adapt to all stay configurations.
Looking for volunteers
However, to keep this project going, the association needs support. “We are looking for volunteers for small tasks such as cleaning, mowing, cutting wood or even odd jobs. A few hours a year are enough to experience beautiful moments of conviviality and participate in this solidarity adventure” encourages Bruno Tauzin, president of the CVLV.
An associative dynamic serving local life
The CVLV PSR is an association under the 1901 law, of general interest approved by Youth and Popular Education. The full name of the association, Center de Vacances et de Loisirs Verdelaisien Pôle Social Rural. She has, in turn, renovated chalets in the Pyrenees, created and run a recreational center and holiday camps, set up after-school reception, experimented with the creation of a social center on her territory, helped with the implementation place of different projects, created a “kermestival” to have currently taken the form and organization of a social living space: a place of proximity with a global, family and intergenerational social vocation; a place of social life allowing residents to express, design and carry out their holiday projects.
To maintain affordable prices, the association is also eligible for tax-exempt donations of up to 70%. Each contribution helps to perpetuate this haven of peace in the heart of the Pyrenees.
