The logbook of Tanguy Le Turquais
By taking the start of the most prestigious round-the-world sailing race alone, without stopovers or assistance, Tanguy Le Turquais knew that he was not among the favorites: “I’m not going to win the Vendée Globe with my “old” boat, he explains. Just trying to finish it and position myself as well as possible. So, all this energy that we are not going to spend on development or performance, we decided to put it at the service of people, at the service of discovery.” Tanguy is a perfect guide to take people on board his IMOCA. It’s even obvious for the skipper who grew up in Vannes, with the sea and exceptional boats as his natural horizon: “These boats have been a dream of mine since I was little. However, I had to wait until I was 30 to get on one even though I saw them every day. It created real frustration!”
This is why when he became the owner of his boat, the desire arose to “to offer it, to introduce it to people who didn’t necessarily have access to it.” Thus, Tanguy spares no effort to share with all his followers on land his experience as a competitor confronted with the multiple hazards of navigation during the race. But its commitment was manifested well before the Vendée Globe, in part thanks to its sponsor GetYourGuide (new window) — the ideal app to discover and explore any travel destination.
Sparkles in the eyes
“GetYourGuide was the first partner to embark on the projectremembers Tanguy. And for that, I will thank him for life because it unlocked everything else!” If he initially wonders about how to reconcile among his sponsors a tourism player like GetYourGuide and Lazare, an association working in favor of people without fixed housing or living on the street, he quickly notes that everything assembles as best as possible: “It was great! We were able to introduce and sail together on this Formula 1 of the seas both Lazare roommates and people who had been through GetYourGuide. So there was both a sporting side and a social side.” In total, more than 200 people were able to access the IMOCA and on each crossing, Tanguy witnessed the same spectacle: “It was an absolutely extraordinary sailing experience: I saw sparkles in the eyes of all my passengers! I even believe that these are my fondest sailing memories”he confides with a touch of emotion. Does he already imagine repeating the experience? “What existed was wonderful, it worked so well… I regret not having done more. So maybe afterward, we’ll see…” In any case, we will have to wait a few more weeks for him to cross the line in Les Sables-d'Olonne: Tanguy still has his world tour to complete…
