Currently on orange alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms, Mayotte was hit by torrential rains this Friday, January 3. Much damage was noted on infrastructure already weakened by the passage of the cyclone three weeks earlier, as evidenced by the photos taken this Friday morning after only an hour of rain.
In Kawéni, an eight-year-old child was injured. According to our information, he found himself stuck under the wall of a garage which collapsed on the victim and suffered fractures to his lower limbs. The CHM was not spared. The floods caused extensive material damage. Hospital management said the tarpaulins installed had not held up and needed to be reinstalled urgently. The maternity ward, surgical suite and Jacaranda health center were flooded.
Since this morning, the Mayotte departmental fire and rescue service has indicated that the number 18 is no longer accessible to customers of the operator SFR.
