The mysterious execution of the Sarcelles pensioner, a cumbersome “cold case”

Fourteen years ago, Jean-Pierre Charbonnier was killed in front of his building by a man whose face was hidden by a scarf. Revenge for obscure motivations or mistaken identity? The case was unfortunately dismissed early.

On February 9, 2010 in Sarcelles (Val-d’Oise), Jean-Pierre Charbonnier, a 64-year-old retiree with no apparent history, was the victim of an execution worthy of a movie. The perpetrator is still on the run today. Fourteen years later, the family is requesting that the case be reopened. In the absence of any new leads, the “cold cases” judicial unit dedicated to serial and unsolved crimes, created in 2022 in Nanterre and already overwhelmed, does not seem very keen. However, experience shows that a fresh look can sometimes lead to solving the mystery, even in the absence of any new evidence.

On that early winter morning in 2010, Jean-Pierre Charbonnier, a recently retired former truck driver, married and father of two children, leaves the building on Place Charcot where he has lived for 30 years, at number 9. He buys his newspaper, as he does every morning, and posts a letter, then returns home where he realizes that he has lost his keys. So he goes out again to retrace his steps in reverse, goes to entrances 11 and 13, then comes out. That’s where a tall man, a scarf over his face, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, later described by witnesses as “European or Mediterranean type”, emerges from the end of the square. He wordlessly shot him three 7.65 caliber bullets in the torso and stomach and fled. His wife, alerted, goes down to lean close to her husband, who is still conscious. ” What happened ? “she asks. “I don’t know… I don’t know him, why me?”he whispers in substance. He is taken to the hospital where he dies the next day.
