The Dax is expected to start Tuesday’s session down, according to calculations by banks and brokers.

After the first round of elections in France, fears of a radical change in policy in the country had initially subsided at the beginning of the week, leading to relief on European stock markets. Although the German benchmark index was unable to maintain price gains of up to 1.2 percent on Monday, it ended the session up 0.3 percent at 18,291 points.

Investors will focus on euro zone consumer price data later today. The previous day, the German inflation rate had surprisingly fallen to 2.2 percent in June, despite the Euro football tournament. Experts polled by Reuters expect the euro zone inflation rate to have also fallen slightly in June, to 2.5 percent from 2.6 percent in May. This would bring the rate somewhat closer to the European Central Bank’s target of 2 percent. The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates in June and could do so again this year if inflationary pressures ease.

At the ECB’s central bank forum in Sintra, ECB President Christine Lagarde, US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and Brazilian Central Bank Governor Roberto Campos Neto will also discuss monetary policy in the afternoon. Investors are particularly hoping that Lagarde and Powell will provide some guidance on the direction of interest rates on both sides of the Atlantic in the coming months.
