With Cap’o’monde, the festival committee is celebrating six decades of events in Vierzon this weekend

Created 60 years ago, the Vierzon festival committee organized the carnival, Cap Scène… With Cap’o’monde this weekend, the volunteers want to celebrate the anniversary with all the residents.

Who remembers the party favors that covered the sidewalks after the carnival in Vierzon? Who has already seen the queen’s float, decorated by all the florists of Vierzon? And who danced on the Cap scene program, in front of Tri Yann, Manu Dibango, or even Sanseverino? For sixty years the festival committee has been offering festivities for its residents. The anniversary is celebrated this weekend at Parc de la Noue.

But who remembers that the committee was created in 1938 by several leaders of local associations and entities (the Lyre Vierzonnaise, the cycling club, the tourist office, the municipality, etc.), under the presidency of Doctor Constant Duval

? Except that the Second World War calmed the goodwill of the time, and it was not until 1964 that the associative statutes were re-emerged, and a new office was formed.

Going out in Cher: our suggestions for this weekend of June 28, 29 and 30

“The objective was to have a carnival in Vierzon,” recalls the current president, Yvon Roblin. Jacques Raimbault (was a municipal councilor from 1959, then deputy mayor of Vierzon, Editor’s note) had enjoyed a cavalcade, during a grape harvest festival in Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine). He would have said, “if Bagneux does it, we must be able to do it in Vierzon”. » This is how the people of Vierzon experienced twenty-one years of carnivals capable of filling entire streets with crowds coming to see the floats recovered from the carnivals of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).

“The festival committee received a subsidy of 500,000.00 francs the first year, in 1964. After the festivals, the floats were resold in Vichy (Allier) so that other floats could be purchased later,” continues Yvon Robin.

Cap Scène from 2002 to 2011

Since the carnivals, the festival committee has never stopped showing initiative, while adapting to the contexts of the times. In 1975, entry to the carnival became chargeable (5 francs with a packet of confetti), to respond to the increase in confetti prices. From 1985, the volunteers tried several festivities: the charivari (the public follows a procession), a magic festival, a collectors’ fair, the Camargue days… Before imagining Cap Scène, a music festival which lasted from 2002 to 2011, or to organize large rifles from 2007, and also to take over the management of New Year’s Eve in 2008.

Since 2013, the flagship event has been Cap’o’monde: a festival that began by highlighting cultures (South America, Celtic countries, etc.) before organizing shows and entertainment in the Abbey garden for seven editions, until 2023. For the past two years, the committee has taken over the Foulées de Vierzon, previously held by the Village Festival Committee (which disappeared in 2019). It also organizes flea markets, theater evenings, etc. What will be the next challenge? Finding the next generation for the years to come, in order to stay the course… in Vierzon.
