A few days before the first round of the early legislative elections, Lyon Capitale takes stock of the issues at stake in the election, constituency by constituency. Focus on the 9th district.

Bastion of the right, the 9th constituency of Rhône could swing to the extreme right. It brings together 73 municipalities divided into five cantons: Anse, Beaujeu, Belleville, Monsols, Villefranche-sur-Saône.

The six candidates

  • Chantal Helly (Workers’ struggle)
  • Alexandre Portier (LR), outgoing deputy
  • Jean-Henri Soumireu-Lartigue (PS / Popular Front)
  • Damien d’Autryve (Regions and Peoples in Solidarity)
  • Antoine Laurent (Renaissance)
  • Patrick Louis (RN / Reconquest / LR)

The results of previous elections:

European elections:

  • National gathering: 34.33%
  • Renaissance : 15,56 %
  • Socialist Party: 11.24%
  • Republicans: 9.05%
  • LFI : 7.95 %
  • Winback: 6.6%
  • Environmentalists: 4.93%

Second round of the 2022 legislative elections:

  • The Republicans (Alexandre Portier): 61.51%
  • Renaissance (Ambroise Méjean): 38.49%

The issues: a Republican stronghold in the hands of the RN?

In this constituency in the hands of the right since 1968, the National Rally achieved more than 30% of the votes cast in the European elections. Already in 2022, the far-right legislative candidate had obtained 18.23% of the votes in the first round. For this early election, Marine Le Pen’s party could well tilt the territory in its favor and obtain an additional deputy seat.

Especially since Eric Zemmour’s Reconquest party, which received more than 6% of the votes cast in the European elections, is not presenting a candidate and is lining up behind Patrick Louis, scientific director of Issep, the science school politics of Marion Maréchal-Le Pen. A scenario with a second round opposing a far-right list to the outgoing MP Alexandre Portier thus seems to be taking shape. In this case, the dynamic risks speaking in favor of the far right. The right still hopes that in rural areas the leaver bonus still works to maintain its stronghold.
