This Wednesday, June 19, 2024, a baby was found dead in Carpentras in Vaucluse in a vehicle.

Macabre discovery in the PACA region. A baby, aged only 7 months, was found dead in a vehicle parked in a parking lot in a Zac near Carpentras, announces the daily Provence.

An oversight

The infant was found this Wednesday late afternoon, around 4:45 p.m. The emergency services could only note the child’s death once they arrived on the scene.

Although it is still early to know the exact causes of this tragedy, a path seems to be emerging according to information from the local media. The child’s little one was going to work this Wednesday morning and parked around 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the company where he works. He then allegedly forgot his 7-month-old baby inside.

More and more

Several weeks ago, a similar case already took place in Sausheim (Haut-Rhin) in Alsace. A father had to drop his little boy off at daycare before taking his shift in a company but he forgot him in the back seat of the vehicle, parked in the company parking lot.

The temperature reached 22 degrees on Tuesday afternoon, which can rise to 47 degrees inside a car. Arriving on site, firefighters and a doctor from SMUR (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service) could only note the death of the baby.

Also in Occitania, Noémie, who was only 19 months old, was forgotten in a car in 2007 and died of dehydration in her father’s vehicle in Béziers.

forgotten baby syndrome

How could these parents forget their children? In several of these similar cases, neither alcohol nor narcotics came into play. In 2014, in an article (in English), the American neuroscientist David Diamond explained these dramas by a “missed from the subconscious”.

“Our hypothesis is that the parent forgets to stop at the daycare because dropping the child off is not in their routine or they are not the parent in charge of this task usually,” explains David Diamond. Stress and lack of sleep can encourage this type of behavior.
