Ivory Coast: Covid-19 back in the country? Update on the situation

Information according to which Covid-19 has made a comeback in Ivory Coast is circulating on social networks.

The Ivorian Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene provides a formal denial and reassures the population.

“For several days, we have noticed the circulation on social networks of an article followed by a message attributed to the WHO and the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, reporting an epidemic of a Covid-Omicron XBB, five times more dangerous than the delta variant, with a higher mortality rate.

The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage wishes to bring to the attention of national opinion that these various elements in circulation do not emanate from the WHO or its services.

These malicious messages, which are likely to sow doubt and fear among the population, are indeed fake news.

Since the observation of the resurgence of cases of Covid-19 in certain countries of the sub-region, upon returning from the Hajj 2024, measures have been taken to prevent any risk of spread of Covid-19 in our country.

To this end, an information and health control system has been put in place at Félix Houphouët-Boigny airport, since June 24, 2024, to test travelers returning from Hajj and certain at-risk countries.

This system has made it possible to record to date, June 28, 2024, 25 cases of Covid-19 out of 619 travelers sampled (PCR) or 4% of positive cases, 0 deaths.

This rate is below the disease control threshold.

Positive cases are isolated and monitored, with strict observance of barrier measures in accordance with the national strategy to combat Covid-19.

The MSHPCMU recommends the following measures to ensure the protection of populations.

– Systematic screening for Covid-19 in people presenting one of the following signs:

Fever, cough and difficulty breathing;

– Compliance with barrier measures by affected people and those around them, in particular wearing a mask;

-Washing hands with soap and water;

– In case of positive Covid test:

-Consultation and care are free at the nearest health center;

– Vulnerable people are invited to be vaccinated and observe barrier measures;

Vaccines are available and are administered free of charge in our health facilities.

The Ministry calls on the population to be vigilant, to remain calm and, above all, not to give in to panic.
