While your family and friends are fond of sending all kinds of photos on Whatsapp, your storage space is decreasing day by day. This is normal, the automatic download of photos on Whatsapp is still activated. Here’s how to fix it.

Is your storage space decreasing day by day? The photos you store on your smartphone are certainly the main cause. Even more so if you use Whatsapp.

Your loved ones and friends (who may be on vacation) are constantly inundating you with photos. Issue? They are downloaded automatically from Whatsapp. As are videos and voice messages. Without recurring sorting, an accumulation of files can saturate your phone’s storage space.

Fortunately, it is possible to deactivate this option. As Meta says in its Help Center: “You can configure WhatsApp to automatically download photos, audio, videos, and documents when you’re using mobile data, Wi-Fi, or while roaming. You can enable or disable this option according to your preferences.”

Configure automatic download on iOS

  • Go to Whatsapp settings.
  • Select the “Storage and Data” page.
  • In the “Automatic media download” section, tap the media type you want (Photos, Audio, Video, Documents).
  • Select one of three options: Never; Wireless ; Wi-Fi and cellular.

As Meta points out, with the “Never” option, “media will never be automatically downloaded. You will have to tap on the file to download it.”

Set up automatic download on Android

  • Go to the application settings.
  • Select the “Storage and Data” page.
  • In the “Automatic media download” section, confirm your choice between “Using mobile data”; “When connected to Wi-Fi” and “When roaming”.
  • Check the type of media you want to download automatically.

To prevent photos from automatically downloading to your Android smartphone, you will need to uncheck all media (Photos, Audio, Video, Documents).
