Chinese telecom giant Huawei has signed a memorandum of understanding with Smart Africa, an alliance of 40 African countries responsible for the continent’s digital agenda. The partnership aims to improve ICT talent training and facilitate knowledge transfer.

(Cio Mag) – Through this partnership, both parties are committed to boosting the information and communication technology (ICT) sector on the continent. “We believe that this alliance constitutes a solid and dynamic framework to continue investing in digital development in Africa,” Huawei Vice President Mr. Xue Man commented. Huawei Northern Africa and Huawei Southern Africa officials also welcomed the partnership, which reinforces their core philosophy: “In Africa, for Africa.”

Transfer of skills

For its part, Smart Africa says it is satisfied with this new momentum in cooperation. “We are committed to exploring and accelerating opportunities for knowledge and skills transfer in digital transformation for the benefit of our member countries”said Lacina Koné, the organization’s director general. The signing of the partnership took place after a visit by the Smart Africa delegation to Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, a city located in southeastern China. According to the press release from both parties, this visit allowed the Smart Africa delegation to discover “the latest technological innovations and trends in the digital economy”.

Launched in 2013 by seven Heads of State, the Smart Africa Alliance’s mission is to accelerate the sustainable socio-economic development of the African continent and integrate it into the knowledge economy through affordable access to broadband and the use of ICTs. The alliance brings together 40 member countries, representing more than a billion people, as well as more than 50 members from the private sector committed to Africa’s vision and progress.
