The Israeli army successively claimed, Friday January 3, to have intercepted a missile and a drone fired by Yemen, from where the Houthi rebels have recently launched several attacks on Israel. The missile was intercepted during the night after entering Israeli territory, the army announced, adding that it was examining information on debris that fell in the center of the country, where warning sirens were triggered.
The Houthis, supported by Iran, announced at the end of December that they had launched two missiles, the first against Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv and the second towards a power plant south of Jerusalem, Israel claiming to have intercepted a missile. Israel later declared that it had responded to these “repeated attacks” by carrying out several strikes on Yemen, notably at Sanaa international airport.
The Houthis have launched several missile and drone attacks against Israel since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered on October 7, 2023 by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israeli soil, claiming to be acting in solidarity with the Palestinians. They also attack boats linked to Israel, the United States or the United Kingdom sailing in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
