Apple broke its silence on Monday, January 6, in response to repeated complaints from the BBC. Since mid-December, the British media has been denouncing the errors of Apple Intelligence, a tool offered by the American brand using artificial intelligence to group and summarize news on iPhone, and guilty of occasionally introducing errors. These summaries, taking the form of notifications and which are not yet available in France, for example gave the winner of the world darts championship while it was not finished, wrongly asserted that the tennis player Rafael Nadal had revealed his homosexuality, or assured that Luigi Mangione had committed suicide after his arrest for the murder of the boss of UnitedHealthcare, according to the BBC.
By press release, cited by the specialized media TechCrunchApple announced that “In the coming weeks, an update will clarify when summary text is provided by Apple Intelligence”. Because for the moment, these news summaries are very explicitly attributed to the media from which they are inspired, such as the BBC or the New York Timeswhose reputation is largely due to the reliability of their journalism. Apple clarified that this feature was still in beta, that is to say being tested, and that it had to be activated voluntarily to benefit from it.
A commitment that should not satisfy Reporters Without Borders, which is calling for the pure and simple removal of this functionality, the new labeling of summaries announced by Apple not responding to the problem of false information that its tool sometimes generates. “This accident shows the extent to which generative AI-based services are still too immature to produce reliable information for the public, worried the NGO in a press release issued in December. They should not be authorized on the market for these uses. »
