Two people died in a landslide caused by torrential rain in southeastern Switzerland on Saturday night. A third person is currently missing.

A violent storm hits Switzerland this weekend, with torrential rain in the southeast of the country. In the canton of Ticino, two people died following a landslide caused by bad weather during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the south-east of the country.

A third person is currently missing: “The bodies of two people were found by rescuers in connection with the landslide that occurred in the Fontana region”, in the northeast of the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, according to a press release from the police of the canton of Ticino, who specify that the identification is in progress.

On social media, Ticino State Councilor Norman Gobbi expressed his sympathy for the affected population. “The bad weather last night hit Ticino and particularly the Maggia valley hard. With deep solidarity and emotion, we express our closeness and support to our friends in this valley in this difficult moment. First responders are already busy and operational to save lives and are looking for technical solutions to restore connections,” he posted this Sunday morning on X.

The upper Maggia Valley is currently isolated due to heavy rains that hit the region overnight from Saturday to Sunday. The bad weather caused the flow of the Maggia River to increase from 25 cubic metres per second to 2,000, while in Cevio the Visletto bridge collapsed, reports RTS.

The police have appealed to the population to limit their movements and not go to places hit by bad weather.
