Antilles threatened by Hurricane Beryl, classified as “extremely dangerous”: News

Hurricane Beryl is now a category 4 and is arriving in the Antilles with winds of more than 200 km/h, marking the start of a particularly early hurricane season.

The first hurricane of the season will be particularly dangerous in the Atlantic basin. Hurricane Béryl, which is heading towards the Antilles, reached category 4 on Sunday June 30, which means that the phenomenon is “extremely dangerous”announces the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, as reported by BFMTV.

Winds and storms “potentially fatal” are expected in the Windward Islands from Monday morning July 1, alerts the NHC. Such a phenomenon is particularly rare at the start of the hurricane season, which runs from the beginning of June to the end of November.

Hurricane watch triggered

On almost all of the islands in the affected sector, hurricane vigilance has been triggered: Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, etc. Concerning Martinique, the prefect has put the departmental operational center of the French island.

The authorities are also particularly vigilant about the state of the sea: “it is already very likely that the sea state will be very rough from Sunday evening, and particularly during the day of Monday”anticipate the services of the French State in Martinique. Waves of 5 meters are expected in the channel of Sainte-Lucie, in the south of the island.

This particularly intense and early start to the hurricane season is explained by the development of the La Niña meteorological phenomenon and by high temperatures, informs the American Oceanic and Atmospheric Observation Agency (NOAA). This is a direct consequence of climate change, which intensifies and makes extreme weather phenomena more frequent.
