On Thursday, June 13, Mr. Birame Souleye Diop, Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of Senegal, chaired a crucial workshop dedicated to the presentation of the strategic orientations document for a just energy transition (JETP). This workshop was held with the technical assistance of the Tony Blair Institute, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in this area.

The main objective of this workshop was to discuss and validate the strategic directions for a just energy transition in Senegal. This process includes a comprehensive assessment of current and future challenges related to energy production and consumption, as well as the exploitation of recently discovered oil and gas resources.

Key points covered during this workshop included: Renewable Energy Development: Promote renewable energy such as solar and wind power to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Efficiency: Implement measures to improve energy efficiency in all sectors of the economy in order to reduce energy consumption and associated costs.

Modern Infrastructure and Technologies: Invest in modern infrastructure and advanced technologies to support the energy transition, including the development of smart grids and energy storage systems.

Social Justice and Equity: Ensure that the energy transition benefits all layers of society, by creating green jobs and guaranteeing access to energy for marginalized communities.

Technical assistance from the Tony Blair Institute has been crucial in providing strategic advice and global best practices, helping Senegal chart a clear and effective roadmap to achieve its energy goals.

Ultimately, the workshop chaired by Mr. Birame Souleye Diop marks an important step in Senegal’s commitment to a sustainable and equitable energy transition, aiming to balance economic development with environmental protection and social well-being. .
