In recent months, many products offered in mass distribution have been affected by shrinkflation.

A phenomenon that misleads consumers…

Shrinkflation is a ‘commercial strategy’ – not honest if it is not announced by the manufacturer – by which, while the quantity of product contained in a good decreases, the price of the good is stable or even increases. For these reasons and from Monday July 1, supermarkets and hypermarkets will have to display the products concerned via labels.

All supermarkets of more than 400 square meters are affected by the law

All supermarkets of more than 400 square meters are affected by this ‘anti-shrinkflation’ law.. Bottled water, Coca-Cola, pet food, laundry detergent, rice, pasta, olive oil, absolutely every department is affected by this ‘loss of purchasing power’.

For consumers it is a loss of purchasing power

Faced with this, we notice that consumers’ purchasing habits have changed. Customers are not fooled: “If for the same price, we have less, it is as if it increases. So inevitably it influences the choice of our purchases.s”.

At UFC-Que Choisir, we ask ourselves another question: “How do we manage products whose quantity will be reduced, but whose price will drop slightly?”

Last April, Bruno Le Maire launched in the media: “Shrinkflation is a scam, we’re putting an end to it”. Minister Delegate in charge of Business, Tourism and Consumption, Olivia Grégoire, added: “When shrinkflation rhymes with lack of information, consumers are the first victims“.
