2024 Legislative Elections: Towards an Ungovernable France?

Calls for a “republican front” and a “barrier to the far right” multiplied very quickly when the results of the first round of the legislative elections were announced on Sunday evening. The voting instructions for the new Popular Front and Renaissance are similar for the moment: in the event of a three-way race, the last candidate must withdraw so as not to divide the votes in favor of the National Rally. But at the heart of the presidential majority, the call is divisive, with Edouard Philippe and Bruno Le Maire preferring “neither, nor”: not a single vote for the National Rally. No votes either for France Insoumise.

So will the Republican front hold? Does it make sense to voters who are being told, once again, who and how to vote? Will this be enough to limit the establishment of the National Rally in the National Assembly as the other parties hope?

The scenarios beyond Sunday, July 7 are multiplying: would a cohabitation between Jordan Bardella and Emmanuel Macron be functional? Would the president be better off proposing a government of technocrats in the absence of a clear majority?
