Elected on Raphaël Glucksmann’s Awake Europe list, Chloé Ridel calls for a large rally on the left for the legislative elections. She answers questions from Midi Libre this Monday.

Did you have time to savor your election to the European Parliament?

Not really. As I entered the RTL studio to comment on the results, the announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly came. We have moved into another political era. We are setting out a worrying path for the country. But we are in the process of putting ourselves in battle order to rally very widely on the left.

That is to say… until LFI?

For the moment, we have joined the Popular Front initiative launched by François Ruffin, with Olivier Faure, Marine Tondelier, Fabien Roussel… The prospect that in three weeks the far right will govern France is something that ‘we can’t let this happen. We take note of Emmanuel Macron’s rout. Now, we need to bring up program points, substantive discussions and see to what extent we can unite.

In the Gard, few municipalities have not placed the Bardella list at the top…

Yes, it is very high, more than 40%… We are the second force in the department, but we cannot embody the alternative alone, that is clear. We must prevent all constituencies from switching to the RN. By making voters understand that on questions of purchasing power, the fight against medical deserts, or the sustainability of agriculture, the answers are not found on the far right! Who voted against the reestablishment of the ISF, against the regulation of the freedom of establishment of doctors…? In addition, they are climate skeptics! We can’t take these people seriously…

In Europe, the far-right has also progressed…

We, socialists and democrats, remain as the leading left-wing group in the European Parliament. We are seeing a surge in the far-right, particularly in Austria, Spain and Italy. It will be a mandate for combat and resistance, knowing that the far right is using the Trojan horse strategy: they no longer want to leave Europe, they want to destroy it from within.
