Bosch unveils a revolutionary safety system for electric bike batteries

The famous motor manufacturer Bosch, leader in the electric bicycle sector, has lifted the veil on a brand new safety function called “Battery Lock”. The latter ensures that the battery of your VAE is unusable in the event of theft.

The theft of electric bikes, or even e-bike batteries, is a small scourge that has been plaguing for several years now. What’s more, since the boom in electric bikes observed after the deconfinement linked to Covid-19, in 2020. Since then, security systems have never stopped evolving and improving.

Among the players positioned on the front line to make your cycles safer is Bosch. The German equipment manufacturer is quite simply the leader in motors and batteries for electric bikes. And on the occasion of CES 2025 organized in Las Vegas from January 7 to 10, the overseas firm unveiled a brand new, unique system.

An exciting new layer of security

Here is the “Battery Lock” function, which allows you to digitally lock the battery of your electric bike. It’s simple: when this system is activated, it ensures that the accumulator is unusable in the event of theft. It therefore no longer has any use, and by extension no longer any value.

« As soon as the Battery Lock function is activated in the eBike Flow app, the battery automatically locks when the eBike is turned off. If a locked battery is inserted into another e-bike equipped with the intelligent system, it automatically deactivates the latter’s pedal assistance, thus rendering the entire e-bike unusable by the thief», Explains the press release sent to the editorial staff.

This layer of security is added to the mechanical protection – a padlock to be precise – of removable batteries from Bosch such as the PowerTube and the PowerPack.

For Bosch, “any resale of the battery also becomes unnecessary, which reduces the risk of theft“. One scenario is nevertheless advantageous for thieves: if they simply decide to resell the battery via parcel delivery, then the final buyer can be fooled. In the event of hand delivery, we imagine that a test of the battery sold is carried out: in this case, the buyer will notice that it does not work.

From summer 2025, but there is a but

The German group adds: “It is possible to use several digital keys simultaneously for the Battery Lock function: the smartphone with the eBike Flow application, as well as the Kiox 300 or Kiox 500 screen. The eBike Flow application allows these digital keys to be managed by full flexibility and also deactivate the Battery Lock function, if for example you want to share the battery with friends or family members“. A practical and rather well thought out idea.

Please note that the “Battery Lock” function is compatible with all Bosch systems compatible with the Smart System, as well as Dual Battery combinations and PowerMore 250 range extenders. To benefit from it, you will however have to wait: an update update will be deployed from summer 2025. In addition, this function will only be available with the Flow+ paid subscription.
