In front of the press just before the start of the meeting organized in the premises of the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, MM. Prévot and Bouchez, who linked their destiny to form majorities at all levels, have also clearly displayed their differences.

“We want to refinance the (health) sector and stand alongside medical and nursing staff,” insisted Mr. Prévot who, throughout the campaign, had defended an increase to 3.5% of the growth standard for health care expenses.

For Mr. Bouchez, the next legislature should instead serve to “optimize means”.

The goal, however, is not to make savings, assured Montois, but to make the system more effective to “control the growth of expenses”, in particular through a better prevention policy.

“With better prevention, people will be healthier, and on top of that we will save money,” judged Mr. Bouchez.

This meeting with health stakeholders lasted more than three hours to allow everyone to express their concerns. The future standard of growth in health care also occupied a good part of the discussions.

“With a standard of 1.5%, that won’t be enough. But with 3.5, we can do things,” said Paul De Munck, president of the Belgian group of general practitioners, at the end of the meeting.

“We clearly felt the differences between the two presidents. They have just decided to become a couple. We will now see who will gain the upper hand…”.

Also invited to speak, François Perl, president of the intermutualist college, reported a calm exchange. MM. Above all, Prévot and Bouchez showed themselves to listen to their guests. “We heard little about the solutions,” he commented after the meeting.

A strong idea of the liberals, the question of prevention policy as a means of saving money in health was obviously addressed.

“There is unanimity among health stakeholders on the usefulness of better prevention,” added Mr. Perl. But this will only bring its financial benefits in the medium and long term. Any short-term savings in the sector are therefore not possible, he stressed.

At the end of the day, MM. Bouchez and Prévot continued their consultations by receiving family and disability stakeholders.
