In the absence of Julian Alaphilippe (not retained by his team) and Thibaut Pinot (retired), the French will have to find new darlings to thrill during the 2024 Tour de France. Luckily, they will be spoiled for choice given the runners present on the Grande Boucle during this 111th edition.

The favorites and the outsiders

Given that Vingegaard is diminished, Pogacar is clearly the favorite this year. The two-time defending champion will still try to make it three despite his fall during the Tour of the Basque Country last April. Having recovered from his fractures (clavicle and several ribs), his pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax, the Visma champion will do his best on the Tour de France. He will also have to do without Sepp Kuss, who withdrew due to Covid.

Vingegaard’s misfortune is Pogacar’s happiness, who will have no pity. The winner of the Tour in 2020 and 2021 wants to take back what is due to him. The leader of the UAE team has just won the Giro and wants to achieve the double that no one has been able to do since a certain Marco Pantani (1998). Precisely, the 2024 Tour de France starts on the land of the ‘Pirate’. Pogacar has just shone on the Giro d’Italia by winning with about 10 minutes ahead of his pursuer. Unprecedented since 1965. After his victories at Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Catalonia, he would like to add a third Tour de France to his list of achievements this summer. Even if he had Covid 10 days ago, we don’t really see how the final victory could escape him…

Leader of Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe, Primoz Roglic acts as an outsider in this edition. Now far from Visma and Vingegaard, he can do well. Winner of the Tour of Spain in 2019, 2020 and 2023, and the Tour of Italy 2023, he will have to be followed closely. He also won the Critérium du Dauphiné recently.
