Bignona, June 14 (APS) – In total, 2,017 heads of sheep have been recorded to date at the Bignona fairground for the needs of Tabaski, the head of the departmental service of the breeding, Kaly Boubane, estimating that the level of supply is satisfactory in this part of the south of the country.
“48 hours before the Tabaski festival, the Bignona fairground which constitutes the only official point of sale of the eponymous department is well stocked with sheep with 2,017 heads already recorded out of a target of 5,000 heads this year,” declared Mr. Boubane in an interview with the APS, indicating that these sheep came from Fouta and other regions of Mali.
The number of sheep present in Bignona is much greater than that recorded at the fairgrounds, because many other sellers arrive in Bignona with their livestock without going through this sales site, he observed.
“There are street sellers who squat in neighborhoods and set up shop all over the city,” according to the departmental livestock inspector.
While customers were in demand a few days ago, a large turnout was noted this Friday at the Bignona fairground where buyers found the prices of sheep very high.
“I wanted to buy a sheep for 80 thousand but the seller offered it to me for 95 thousand. This price far exceeds my forecasts,” laments this buyer from Diouloulou.
For the head of the departmental livestock service, Kaly Boubane, sheep are within the reach of all budgets with prices varying between 80 thousand and 400 thousand CFA francs.
Faced with the high cost of sheep, families from the same village sometimes come together to buy an ox and share the meat, he explains.
