Polling stations have opened in mainland France…

A record of proxies

More than 2.6 million powers of attorney have been established since June 10, according to the Interior Ministry, a number four times higher than two years ago over a comparable period.

Polling stations have opened in metropolitan France

Polling stations have been open since 8 a.m. in mainland France, where some 49 million voters are called to the polls. It is possible to vote until 6 p.m., or even 8 p.m. in large cities.

A blocked town hall in New Caledonia

In New Caledonia, “the vote is taking place in the vast majority without incident and in a secure manner”, according to the High Commission of the Republic in the archipelago, while tensions remain high after the riots caused by the rejected electoral reform by the separatists.

The only notable incident concerns Houaïlou, a town located on the east coast where “access to the town hall is blocked by rioters, preventing the opening of the various polling stations and therefore the holding of the vote”. During the night, the Houaïlou gendarmerie was also targeted by “violent attacks with the use of a mine to damage the enclosure”.

The rule for winning in the first round

To be elected in the first round, a candidate must obtain an absolute majority of votes cast as well as the votes of at least a quarter of the voters registered in the constituency.

In 2022, only five deputies were elected in the first round. The leader of the RN Marine Le Pen or the current coordinator of La France insoumise Manuel Bompard had obtained an absolute majority in the first round but had to contest a second round, having not reached the threshold of 25% of those registered.

The challenge of participation

The participation rate is a key figure in the election. This was 47.5% in the first round of the 2022 legislative elections, it could be 63% this Sunday according to the Ipsos polling institute and 67%, according to Ifop in its latest daily survey on the vote, published Friday.

This figure will have a direct impact on the proportion of the 577 deputies who will be elected in the first round and also on the number of potential triangulars, or even quadrangulars which will take place in the second round, on July 7. You must have collected the votes of 12.5% of those registered to be able to remain in the second round. These confrontations between three or even four candidates are sources of uncertainty over the outcome of the election.

Sharp increase in participation in New Caledonia

Due to the time difference, the first figures are starting to arrive from New Caledonia. The turnout in the first round was up sharply this Sunday at noon compared to the 2022 election. This estimated rate is “32.39%. In the previous election, it was 13.06% in 2022 and 15.76% in 2017,” announced the High Commission of the Republic in New Caledonia.

Some 229,000 Caledonians are called to the polls to elect the two deputies from the French territory of the South Pacific and the authorities anticipated a much higher participation than in the European elections, which resulted in an abstention of 86.5%.
