REGIONAL MARINE GUARD SERVING THE COAST

The “Marine Regional Guard” finances the recruitment of seasonal personnel in the region’s marine protected areas during the summer period.

The feedback from summer 2023 demonstrates the interest of the system and its adequacy with the needs and challenges expressed by the managers of marine protected areas in the region in terms of monitoring of water bodies, monitoring of uses and public awareness during periods of high visitor numbers The “Marine Regional Guard” finances the recruitment of seasonal personnel in the region’s marine protected areas during the summer period. Voted in December 2023 by the Region, this regional system is aimed at managers of marine protected areas in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, without distinction of nature/status (national, regional parks, Natura 2000, etc.). The hiring period covers all or part of the summer period, within a limit of eight months agreed for all the agents concerned (e.g.: two agents over four months, or four over two months, etc.). The recruitment process for seasonal agents remains the responsibility of the employing management structure. The main missions assigned to seasonal agents must be linked to field work and include: monitoring of water bodies (in conjunction with the permanent staff of the employing structure), monitoring attendance, raising public awareness, etc. One day of training common to all agents recruited at the start of the summer season was co-organized with the French Office for Biodiversity, partner of the system.

CONCRETE ACHIEVEMENTS

→ During the summer of 2023, 26 guards were recruited for 13 marine protected area management structures (public establishments, communities, associations);

→ Summer 2024 should see the number of funding beneficiaries increase (around fifteen structures expected), alongside that of recruited agents.
