Young driver and his sister killed in collision with heavy goods vehicle

A terrible accident occurred yesterday at midday on the RD 51, the Bagatelle road in Sainte-Suzanne. Around 12:30 p.m., a Volkswagen Polo, with three young people on board, collided with a Scania heavy goods vehicle. The impact, which was very violent with the 26-ton vehicle, was fatal to two of the three occupants of the car, who died on the spot despite the intervention of emergency services.

Alerted, the firefighters, the SMUR and the gendarmerie went to the scene, traffic being blocked in both directions. The intervention system deployed will mobilize three ambulances from the firefighters, a road rescue vehicle and a medical rescue vehicle, but also the SMUR helicopter, and many soldiers from the Saint-Benoît motorized brigade as well as the Sainte-Marie territorial brigade. The municipal police and road agents are also involved.

Mother of victims taken into care

For more than two hours, emergency services tried to resuscitate the two victims, in vain.

The driver of the Polo, an 18-year-old man from Sainte-Marie, and his 20-year-old older sister, who was a passenger, did not survive. Their mother, who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident, had to be treated by the firefighters, who was in a state of shock.

Slightly injured in the eye, the third passenger of the vehicle, a 19-year-old boy, was evacuated in relative emergency. As for the driver of the heavy goods vehicle, a 47-year-old man, he was also medically treated, in a state of shock.

Yesterday, the circumstances of this road tragedy were still to be determined by the investigation opened by the gendarmerie. Post-mortem analyses must be carried out on the two victims, who will be taken to the forensic institute of the Saint-Denis University Hospital.

In addition to any witnesses, the two survivors of the accident will also have to be interviewed when their condition allows. The vehicles involved will also be subject to expert assessments in order to understand the events that led to this terrible collision.
