Monday morning, the fog is low in the Menton region. It is difficult to see the surrounding landscape precisely. A figment of the imagination, perhaps, because the paradox is there: for some, the horizon has never been so clear and open.

The foggy weather did not stop the bathers of the legendary Sablettes beach in Menton. At a time when we hesitate between another “splash” or sitting on a terrace for lunch, the elections of the day before do not really monopolize the conversations, as the verdict seemed to be decided from the beginning.

“The election of Alexandra Masson is anything but a surprisecries Jean-Paul, a trader taking advantage of a day off. She monopolized the field and immediately launched into the campaign. For me, it is the continuity of her work. We often see her around here, that’s what makes the difference.”

At the end of the first round on Sunday evening, Alexandra Masson was the most re-elected MP (56.27%) – she tripled her number of votes in some municipalities – in the Alpes-Maritimes but also in the Var, ahead of Philippe Lottiaux (4e circo du Var) by a short head (56.07%).

“I am clearly not a supporter of the National Rally, poses Antoine, who himself indicates that he is rather in phase with Les Républicains but without flirting with the extreme right. The result does not surprise me because an RN wave is sweeping across France. Here, the LR did not send anyone and the Macronist candidate had no real local ties. In this configuration, Alexandra Masson had a boulevard.”

An election “without suspense” for Marie as the RN candidate was “above the lot”. In line with the shortcut taken by the party, this young retiree from Menton is certain that this will resolve “security problems by stopping immigration.”

Ministry or town hall?

A few hours earlier, there was a buzz at the beginning of Rue Magenta. In Alexandra Masson’s office, a few steps from the town hall, the results from the polling stations arrived throughout the night.

“Next goal is the presidential election in a single round too!”the activists enthused. Today in Menton, tomorrow in the Assembly, the day after tomorrow in a ministry? That is what her supporters wish for her, when others would like to see her stay in Menton permanently. “She would do so much good for the city if she were mayor of Menton,” one of them says. And what if this Sunday’s results were the starting point of a clear path to the 2026 municipal elections in Menton?
