“A succession of events and exchanges with the city of Fort-de-France” made it “impossible” to hold the “Human Rights and LGBTQIA+ Pride March” in the city center of the capital of the Martinique, deplored KAP Caraïbe.

“A little respite” for local residents

Initially planned for June 29 then brought forward by one day due to the first round of early legislative elections being held on Saturday in Martinique, this demonstration was to be the very first of its kind organized on public roads in Martinique.

The town hall justified a last-minute change to the route by the need to give local residents “a little respite” after the Fête de la Musique (June 21).

“Stereotypes and clichés”

The municipality also highlighted the stir caused by the existence of a video showing a dancer in underwear and wearing a wig in the streets of downtown Fort-de-France during an LGBT event the last week.

This response from the town hall to “an artistic proposal made within a militant framework” is “unfair and degrading,” retorted KAP Caraïbe.

The association castigated “the permanent uncertainties” caused by the municipality until the day before the demonstration and criticized “stereotypes, clichés and prejudices unfortunately present at all levels” of Martinique society.
