Seven contenders for two places: this is how the race for candidacy among the Socialists for the Administrative Council in the city of Geneva looks like. While the outgoing Christina Kitsos should be reconfirmed on the ticket without difficulty, the second place – left vacant by the departure of Sami Kanaan, who is retiring after three legislatures – remains very open. Faced with the multiple profiles, more or less known in the political arena, the section will make its choice Tuesday evening during a general assembly. A two-person ticket is most likely, although it cannot be ruled out that there will be pushes for the party to be even more greedy and present three candidates.

In the city of Geneva, a traditional left-wing bastion, the contenders for candidacy for the 2025 elections came out of the woods at the start of the year. And there are two more than in 2020. In order, municipal councilors Olivier Gurtner, Joëlle Bertossa, Albane Dunand Schlechten and Ahmed Jama, as well as Sami Kanaan’s political advisor, Dorina Xhixho. A surprise guest in the person of Fabrizio Michielis, a finance and accounting specialist who recently settled in Geneva, was recently added to this already well-stocked list. An outsider to the end, he is the only one, as trustee manager, not to work for the State or in the subsidized sector. Ultimately, the casting reflects the evolution of the Geneva PS, which looks less and less like the workers’ party.
