Canada Post in deficit: is this the end of mail 5 days a week?

The five-day-a-week mail delivery service could be abandoned by Canada Post. This is a solution that the state-owned company could consider to compensate for the deficit of nearly $750 million for the year 2023 which was announced last Friday.

Faced with these disastrous results, Canada Post says it is studying several scenarios. However, these possible solutions have not yet been officially revealed.

However, according to information circulating behind the scenes obtained by TVA Nouvelles, mail delivery could go from five days a week to perhaps four, three and even two days a week.

“These are not changes [qui se feront] overnight, explained a Canada Post representative, Valérie Chartrand. There are changes that will take time, but we must have this discussion now to ensure the future of the postal service.

The state-owned company nevertheless assures that it does not plan to stop its home mail delivery activities.

The minister responsible for Canada Post, Jean-Yves Duclos, said he had no intention of putting an end to it, but he believes that major changes are necessary.

“We are not in 1964,” he said in an interview before parliament. Many people know that there is less and less need for letter and bill delivery with bank accounts, but Canada Post must be able to serve the entire country and increase its capacity to deliver packages. »

Besides, starting today, stamps will cost a little more. The purchase of a stamp will increase by $0.07 and will therefore go to $1.15 while they will return to $0.99 per unit for the purchase of a booklet, an increase of 0.08 $.

The need for the service has changed drastically in recent years. In 2006, around 5.5 billion letters were delivered by Canada Post. In 2023, this figure will be close to 2.2 billion.
