The submission of candidacies opened on Friday, until May 17 for people interested in being elected to fill the positions of municipal councilors of Sainte-Pétronille.

Earlier in April, the island village saw its municipal council crumble, with the immediate resignation en bloc of three of its seven elected officials.

“Concerned”

The Minister of Municipal Affairs, Andrée Laforest, then said she was “concerned” about the difficulties prevailing in this city hall. “It’s not normal to come to this,” she declared, while the Quebec Municipal Commission is still investigating the municipality.

The voters of Sainte-Pétronille could therefore be called to the polls, if more than one candidate applies for the same position. If necessary, an advance vote will be held on June 9. The by-election vote is set, if necessary, for June 16.

There Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities provides that the date of the election must be set within 30 days following the notice of vacancy of the positions to be filled. The latter must be held on one of the Sundays included in the four months following the vacancy notice, according to Élections Québec.
