Players have been waiting for this for a long time. And the wait was rewarded! Dragon Ball Sparking Zero has been in the news a lot lately following multiple announcements about it. During the Summer Game Fest, we were able to learn more about the title and we tell you everything in this JV Fast.

Spike Chunsoft and Bandai Namco are playing on the nostalgia of Dragon Ball fans! Sparking Zero is the spiritual sequel to the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise. The last game was released in 2007. 15 years later, players are finally getting a new installment. Scheduled for October 11, we were able to play it during the Summer Game Fest and new features are on the agenda. Discover the content of the title in our JV Fast.

Like the old way

For those who have already played the Budokai Tenkaichi games released on PS2 (and on Wii for some), the gameplay of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero should not disturb you. Strike, defend yourself, teleport, throw waves of energy… It’s very easy to navigate and the movements seem larger than life. Especially since the visual effects deepen the characters’ feelings of power and speed. Enough to make us want to move everywhere in the arenas.

In terms of techniques and powers, this may seem similar to what the Xenoverse and Budokai Tenkaichi games offered. Below the characters’ life bar, you can see an energy bar divided into 5 sections. You will need to fill it (by pressing a button) to be able to use different attacks like a kamehameha. On the other hand, there is a blue bar which charges as the fight progresses. Once at full strength, you obtain a skill point that you can use to launch chain attacks. No energy used here, just your strength and fists!

A story, but not only!

As for the game modes, we will obviously find a versus mode, in which you will have the possibility of facing your friends online, but also locally. Another mode called ‘episode battle’ serves as a single-player story and adventure. It will be possible to follow the epic tale of 8 characters. We don’t know which of the roster will be playable in this mode, but Son Goku will be there, given that he is the protagonist of the manga.

If at first glance the ‘episode battle’ mode may seem quite classic, this one will allow you to spice things up a little thanks to ‘what if’ scenarios. Yes, this information was already known to the players, but we had the opportunity to see it in action and it looks pretty good. For example, it will be possible to go and face Radditz alongside Krilin. While in Akira Toriyama’s work, it is Piccolo who accompanies Son Goku to skin him. A fairly new novelty that will allow to explore different temporalities and will offer special endings to the players.

The only negative point that we could give to this mode is that the characters are very static during the dialogue phases. They appear stoic and have very few animations. This does not mean that the game is going to be an excellent arena fighter! To discover all the new features of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, go to our JV Fast at the top of the article!
