In a publication on his blog, author George RR Martin formalized the return of a Game of Thrones spin-off that was abandoned a few years ago! What is this ?

In a few days in France, on June 17, the universe of Game of Thrones will return to the forefront with the release of Season 2 of House of the Dragon. The setbacks of House Targaryen (and the conflict between Alicent Hightower | Rhaenyra) are about to find a bloody answer, and all of this can be seen here on Max, HBO’s streaming platform. But, this is not the only Game of Thrones spin-off that is in preparation! George RR Martin has just made it official himself, via an article on his blog, the return of a project that was abandoned a few years ago. This is Ten Thousand Shipsa series that takes place a thousand years before the events of the main show.

A promising project

More specifically, the series focuses on Nymeria, Princess of the Rhoynars (the first inhabitants of the Essos region). During what is known as the Second Spice War, she loses all of her allies and is forced to put to sea aboard a huge fleet of ships, along with all of her people, in hopes of escaping from slavery. “We are very excited about this spin-off,” says George RR Martin on his blogbefore adding: “although we are still trying to figure out how we are going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons and these giant turtles”.

A renowned author at the helm

The project was to be launched in 2021, headed by Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential). Now, a certain Eboni Booth, who has just won the Pulitzer Prize for her play “Primary Trust”, is in charge. “She is an incredibly talented young playwright and a pleasure to work with” says George RR Martin on his blog. “When she wasn’t writing and producing her award-winning plays on Broadway (and elsewhere) she was busy with me and HBO.” It is obviously too early to talk about a release date, the author only mentioning a “pilot”. On the other hand, what is certain is that Ten Thousand Ships will cost a lot… In the past, Helgeland compared the project to the Odyssey and the biblical story of Moses, among other things.
