How can we still think of naming our film? Gloria? No, it’s not about Gloria by Sydney Lumet (1999), nor the Gloria by Sebastian Lelio (2012) and even less by Gloria by Christian Keller (2014)… In 2024, Gloria! is therefore a film by Margherita Vicario which, as its name does not suggest, is anything but usual.

We are in Venice, in the 18th centurye century, at the Sant’Ignazio Institute: an orphanage coupled with a conservatory for young girls. The whole community is agitated in view of the imminent visit of the new pope and the great concert which will be given in his honor. Teresa, a young solitary and mute servant, then makes an exceptional discovery which will revolutionize life at the conservatory: a pianoforte.

The discovery of this instrument will plunge the Venetian microcosm into a pure anachronistic delirium where jazz and variety dynamite Vivaldi. Behind the implausibilities of a scenario which assumes its inconsistencies, Gloria! is above all a militant and feminist film which highlights musicians largely ignored by society. These women therefore assert their voices both literally and figuratively.

The mix of styles and eras will confuse some while others will embrace this sweet musical madness. And above all, the emotions are there in this feature film which is not without faults but whose mischievous tone makes up for the sauce. A unique proposition which has the merit of daring to think outside the box.
