Scooter’s worthy successor was elected Friday June 21, 2024 in the Californian city of Petaluma (United States). According to our colleagues at BBC, the new “ugliest dog in the world” is a Pekingese named Wild Thang. The latter is distinguished by a disheveled coat, bulging eyes and a hanging tongue inherited from a disease he contracted when he was a puppy.

Cinquième participation

“Wild Thang was a fan favorite and the fact that he competed five times and only came second, it’s a bit like being the bridesmaid and never the bride! I think we were touched by the fact that he deserved to win,” declared one of the organizers of the famous competition.

This was the 34th edition of this competition. The aim of the latter is in particular to highlight ugly dogs, which are generally not among the first choices of families seeking adoption.

$5,000 up for grabs

This event is also an opportunity for the owners of these little balls of fur. And as proof: the owner of Wild Thang won $5,000 and will be able to appear on the show The Today Show on NBC.

Last year, first place in the competition was won by Scooter, a Chinese crested dog. In 2022, it was also a representative of this breed who won the Californian competition.

The success of this offbeat competition is such that other countries have set up national editions. This is particularly the case in the United Kingdom, where a female dog resulting from a cross between a Pug and a Chinese crested dog was crowned in 2024.
