The UK Food Security Report (UKFSR/2024) highlighted the growing importance of agricultural relations with Morocco and the challenges Britain faces in food production. This document, drawn up by the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, highlights an increase in imports of Moroccan agricultural products in 2023.
Morocco is now among the main suppliers of fresh vegetables to the United Kingdom, representing 7.5% of imports in this sector. This positioning places Morocco alongside other major exporters such as Spain, the Netherlands, France and Poland. This diversification of trading partners has enabled the UK to improve its resilience to global disruptions such as extreme weather events or geopolitical tensions.
Furthermore, the report discusses Morocco’s strategic role in the production of fertilizers, ranking it among the world’s largest producers of phosphate rock, alongside China and the United States. Between 2019 and 2022, global production of phosphate fertilizers recorded a slight decline of 1.9%, reaching 46.1 million tonnes, although the overall trend remains upward in the long term.

The UKFSR report, presented to the UK Parliament every three years, provides a detailed and impartial analysis of data relating to food safety in the UK. It draws on statistics from official, academic and intergovernmental sources to inform policy makers, economic actors and the public on current issues and possible solutions to strengthen the country’s food security.
Thanks to this study, Morocco stands out not only as a key player in agricultural exports, but also as a strategic partner in the global fertilizer supply chain, thus consolidating its essential role in the international food landscape.
