Showers have been falling in Normandy in recent days, causing flooding particularly in the Calvados department such as Caen and near Falaise.
Météo France announces further heavy rain this Wednesday January 8 until Thursday morning. At least 15 mm in the north of the region and up to 30 mm in the southern part. And that’s not all! A snowy episode is also expected this Wednesday, which should increase the floods.
In part of the region, the soils are already well saturated with water, particularly after the heavy rain last weekend: “We went through a fairly dry period from December 22 to the beginning of January 2025. But since Saturday, it has rained a lot,” explains Nicolas Buffard, referent Meteo France in Normandy. So obviously, the rivers are already overflowing in places.
Météo France has therefore placed the five departments of the region (Seine-Maritime, Eure, Calvados, Orne and La Manche) on yellow rain-flood vigilance this Wednesday until Thursday morning.
Please note, Seine-Maritime is placed on orange snow-ice alert this Wednesday, January 8. 3 to 5 centimeters are expected in the department according to Météo France. Orne, Calvados and Eure are on yellow alert.
“After this episode of rain and snow this Wednesday, it should be almost dry across the entire region on Thursday. But from Friday, new showers with 15 mm of rain should fall again on the territory and, therefore, a new risk of flooding is expected”, specifies the forecaster.
It is in Calvados that the rivers are particularly monitored. The Orne has particularly overflowed in recent days, like on the Louvigny side where roads are closed. This river, but also the Noireau, the Vire, the Dives and the Touques are still on yellow alert for floods and will remain so this Wednesday, according to the site Vigicrues
“Courses placed on yellow alert present a risk of flooding generating overflows. We keep an eye on it, especially when there has already been an accumulation of rain,” specifies the DDTM of Calvados.
But Nicolas Buffard wants to be reassuring: “It’s normal winter weather.” Once these periods of rain have passed, the weather will be calmer this weekend and Monday with clear skies and even sunshine.
