The Paris Stock Exchange moved without enthusiasm in the first exchanges of its first session of 2025 on Thursday, before the publication of indicators in the euro zone and the United States.

Around 8:40 a.m. GMT, the CAC 40 index fell 0.51% to 7,344.24 points, after briefly opening in positive territory.

“Market participants are currently in a holding pattern. The new presidential term of future US President Donald Trump promises to be extremely interesting and volatile,” summarized independent analyst Andreas Lipkow.

Investors will learn in the morning of a series of final PMI activity indicators for December in several European countries, including and Germany, as well as for the euro zone.

Then at 2:30 p.m. the publication of employment figures for the same period in the United States, always scrutinized by the markets to determine the monetary policy of the American central bank (Fed).

French investors are also digesting disappointing activity indicators published overnight in China, a crucial market for stocks in the luxury sector, heavyweight of the CAC 40.

Around 9:40 a.m. GMT, Hermès lost 1.46% to 2,288.00 euros, LVMH fell 1.02% to 628.90 euros and Kering lost 1.03% to 235.35 euros.

In China, the purchasing managers' activity index (PMI), calculated by the firm S&P Global and the Chinese economic media Caixin, slowed down in December, to 50.5 points, compared to 51.5 in November.

The world's second largest economy is still facing the crisis in its real estate sector, sluggish domestic consumption as well as trade tensions with the United States and the European Union.

Republican President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, has already promised to strengthen customs duties on Chinese imports.

On the bond market, the benchmark French ten-year bond rose around 8:40 GMT to 3.20%, compared to 3.19% the day before. Its German equivalent, a benchmark in Europe, reached 2.36%.

Foundry of : open letter to Macron
