French heritage. The city of New Orleans in Louisiana (United States) was the scene of a deadly attack this Wednesday, January 1, 2025, where at least ten people lost their lives. The events took place on a historic street in the French Quarter: Bourbon Street.
Created in 1721 during the French Louisiana era, the street is named after the royal Bourbon dynasty. Originally built as a settler quarter, it has since become the city’s cultural center and a renowned nightlife spot.
French-sounding architecture
Architecturally speaking, Bourbon Street is testimony to French domination of the region between the 17th and 18th centuries. The historic buildings with their wrought iron balconies decorated with plants are typical of a mixture of French and Creole styles.
However, the street has become so touristy that for a more authentic New Orleans experience, it is advisable to explore the adjacent streets instead.
