The Gers gendarmes are intensifying road surveillance after 26 offenses noted during New Year's Eve. Reinforced vigilance in the face of an increase in speeding and fatal accidents in 2024.

For New Year's Eve and the start of this new year, the Gers gendarmes went on the hunt for dangerous behavior on the roads. In total, on December 31, no less than 26 offenses, including 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol and three for driving under the influence of drugs, were recorded.

As a reminder, in 2024, 881 permits were withdrawn in the Gers department. While there has been a drop in withdrawals for alcohol consumption as well as drug consumption, withdrawals for speeding are clearly increasing. 363 licenses were suspended last year for speeding compared to 302 in 2023. And, as of January 7, 2025, the Gers state services noted “already too much dangerous behavior.”

This Sunday, January 5, major speeding violations were noted. A motorist was stopped at a speed of 255 km/h on the RN 124, in L'Isle-Jourdain, driving a Porsche. Another driver was caught at a speed of 172 km/h. In both cases, the vehicle was impounded. The motorist's license was immediately withheld.

Accidents are no less, with an increase of 15% between 2023 and 2024 according to data from the prefecture. Over the same period, three more people lost their lives in Gers.

These dangerous behaviors only confirm the determination of the authorities to intensify the fight against road insecurity, particularly in the wake of the first fatal accident of the year. Indeed, the department's roads were once again in mourning with the death of a motorcyclist on Friday January 3. Last year, 16 people lost their lives on the roads of Gers.

The police will maintain repressive actions against the most accident-prone behavior.
