NHL players are known for working hard on the ice, but they also like to let off steam off it, and partying is a common way for them to bond and celebrate. Among them, Russian players have gained a reputation for bringing their personal touch to the festivities.

Whether during the offseason or after a big victory, Russians are known for their love of vodka, hearty toasts and lively gatherings.

Although the league has taken steps in recent years to promote professionalism and balance, stories of legendary parties, notably involving Russian players, have become part of NHL folklore.

These moments of fun and celebration not only strengthen bonds within the team, but also showcase the human side of top athletes, reminding fans that even the pros know how to have fun.

Kevin Dallman who was on the podcast Spittin Chiclets, had a good one to tell about the Russian players he played two seasons with in the KHL.

He remembers the 2012-13 season well, when the NHL was in lockdown and several Russian stars were back in Russia.

Whitney : How was Kovalchuk there? A rock star?

Dallman : He was. Oh, yes. Everywhere he went, this guy. Oh my God. During the lockout we had Bobrovsky, Tarasenko, Panarin, Kovalchuk, Kalinin. We had so much talent. They were kings. They were just kings. But the ”beauties”, who went out every night, didn’t give a damn. Yes, these guys were kings. My God, Kovalchuk, he’s still a legend.

Bissonnette : When it comes to alcohol, how much more diligent were these Russians off the ice than the North Americans? Did they drink themselves sick?

Dallman : Yes, they were drinking that much. There’s a guy I played with. They had to give him injections to stop it before he got out. They gave him an injection. The team gave him an injection in the shoulder. I don’t know what they gave him, but it was so he couldn’t drink until…you know what I mean.
