Brioude is the fourth largest city in terms of number of inhabitants in the Haute-Loire department. With 6,523 inhabitants counted in 2022, it lost 195 citizens, a trend which is partly explained by post-covid. Families are settling in but rather on the countryside side and intramural residents are leaving the city center and putting their property up for sale.
This mobility of the population is noted by Pauline Laloy, real estate advisor. “We always have properties that are put up for sale in Brioude. This month, we sold 2 in the city center. These people are often people who leave the city center to set up around the town of Brioude I think that Brioude is losing some inhabitants but these are people who settle on the outskirts and who continue to participate in the activity of the town.
Mayor Jean-Luc Vachelard is concerned about the decline in the city's population and he has an explanation: “We have social housing that was destroyed because it was running out of steam. The new ones were not made at the same time. The reconstruction of new housing will take place. It will be a different configuration, there will be new accommodation. This will, I think, allow us to regain some of the population. I think this is explained by that, by the drop in social housing offered in Brivadois. »
Brioude will benefit from a very recent 2×2 lane road connection to the A75 motorway, activity zones are developing there. As for the old city center, it should have a new look with a renovation operation implemented this year, enough to envisage a positive dynamic in the next decade.
