Matvei Michkov’s rookie season in Philadelphia is going, overall, pretty well. The forward has collected 29 points in 37 games so far, and despite a more difficult streak recently (he only has two points in his last 10 games), his talent remains undeniable.
He single-handedly energized the Flyers’ offense for much of the season. For a rookie, that’s impressive.
That said, there were still some aspects that were more difficult. Her relationship with John Tortorella, for example, has been talked about… and we feel that she is not necessarily always in good shape.
In an interview with Daria Tuboltseva (Responsible Gambler), Michkov chatted a little about a match where Tortorella benched him for the third period… and it sounded like someone who was there so as not to be fined :
[John Tortorella] is the coachhe knows what is best. – Matvei Mishkov
He then added that Tortorella gave him advice afterward and that he appreciates his coach’s honesty, an important quality for him.
That said, even if Michkov affirms that there is no problem between his coach and him, we still feel that Tortorella is trying to to break something about his player. There are obviously some habits of Michkov on the ice that Tortorella wants to change:
He gives me advice on how to play and what not to do. – Matvei Mishkov
Obviously, the young Russian did not expand on this subject, but it clearly shows that Tortorella challenges him on certain things. Will doing so weaken (further) the relationship between the two?
We are likely to see it in the coming weeks or months.
