The Republican President-elect of the United States Donald Trump paid tribute on Sunday to the former Democratic tenant of the White House Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100, saying that the country owed him “gratitude” for his only mandate from 1977 to 1981.
“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a crucial time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him gratitude.” , wrote the 45th and soon 47th American president about the 39th.
Tenant of the White House from 1977 to 1981
Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter died this Sunday at the age of 100 in his hometown, Georgia, in the southeast of the United States, his foundation announced. The former Democratic leader, who occupied the White House from 1977 to 1981, was the oldest living American president, having benefited from home care for almost two years.
Jimmy Carter was elected to the White House in 1976, in an America still marked by the Watergate scandal which had pushed President Nixon to resign. He was president for only one term.
The architect of the Camp David agreements which led, in March 1979, to the signing of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, the 39th President of the United States was strongly criticized in his country during the hostage-taking of Americans in Iran. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “his decades of tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts.”
After a series of hospitalizations, in February 2023 he “chose to spend the time he had left” at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He received end-of-life care there.
