The leader of La France insoumise Jean-Luc Mélenchon “is not the leader of the New Popular Front and he will not be prime minister,” Ecologist boss Marine Tondelier told AFP on Monday.

Within the different parties that make up the left alliance, the PS, LFI, the PCF and the Ecologists, “there is an agreement to say that the prime minister must be found by consensus among the different political forces,” says Marine Tondelier, who specifies that the candidate must agree with all four parties.

This method of designating the prime minister, in the event of victory for the left in the early legislative elections, was again discussed this morning by the various party leaders, including the national coordinator of La France insoumise, Manuel Bompard, assures the national secretary of Environmentalists.

“It’s not against Jean-Luc Mélenchon”

“We want to have the largest possible majority, that requires consensus. We will discuss until we have a solution that suits all four parties,” specifies Marine Tondelier, eager to find “a calming personality.” “It’s not against Jean-Luc Mélenchon, but our political adversaries are using this scarecrow to discredit us,” she adds.

At the same time, socialist and communist leaders Olivier Faure and Fabien Roussel tweeted: “the NFP deputies, in conjunction with their parties, will choose the personality who creates consensus to bring the country together.”

Environmentalist withdrawal to counter the RN

Furthermore, Marine Tondelier also announced to AFP that the Environmentalists’ candidates for the legislative elections would withdraw in the second round in favor of a candidate “who respects the values of the Republic” in the event of a possible victory for the National Rally.

“Each time an environmentalist candidate, member of the Popular Front, comes in third position, he will withdraw in favor of the candidate who respects the values of the Republic to beat the extreme right,” she declared, specifying henceforth expect “the same clarity from all the political forces that call themselves republican”.

The Ecologists are the first left-wing party to give instructions to withdraw in the event of a risk of victory for the RN in the second round of the legislative elections. “I do not imagine that the position of other members of the New Popular Front could be different, but I let the different party leaders communicate at their own pace,” indicates Marine Tondelier.

“I see among the majority of people playing with fire and I am appalled, it is inconsistent and History will remember it,” declares the woman who is also the opposition municipal councilor in Hénin- Beaumont, stronghold of Marine Le Pen. “Now that we have clarified things about Jean-Luc Mélenchon, I imagine that our adversaries will clarify things about the Republican withdrawal,” she adds.
