On August 6, 2022, an ULM (ultra light motorized) crashed at the end of the runway in Cambaie (Saint-Paul). A 71-year-old instructor pilot was killed and a young 18-year-old pilot was seriously injured. According to information from the Journal de l’Île this Sunday, June 2, 2024, citing a report from the Accident Investigation Office (BEA), the accident was due to a bad maneuver (Photo: www.imazpress.com)

Two years after the accident, the Accident Investigation Bureau (BEA) issued its safety investigation report.

In view of the elements of the file, the testimonies and the analysis of the aircraft, the BEA concludes that there was a loss of control, possibly aggravated by “the incomplete fixation of the instructor’s seat”, indicates the JIR.

The BEA considers that “the tailwind component may have encouraged the pilot to tighten the turns.”

The investigation “did not make it possible to explain the reasons which led the instructor not to interrupt the exercise earlier.” Which leads the BEA to suggest that “the lack of locking of the seat back may have prevented the instructor from effectively taking over the controls or may have interfered with the pilot’s actions.”

The report highlights that the instructor’s partial wearing of the safety harness, as well as the incomplete fixing of the seat, could have aggravated the consequences of the accident.
