A New Yorker transporting a sofa in his moving truck caused an accident when he found a live snake under his seat on Saturday.

“There wasn’t a lot of coherent thinking left at that point. I hate snakes. I panicked. I took my foot off the brake and hit the car in front of us,” said the driver, who did not want to reveal his first name, according to the New York Post.

The 25-year-old was driving around Manhattan with the Marketplace-purchased sofa when he looked down and saw what he thought was a large snake-shaped toy at his passenger’s feet.

“I bent down to grab it. […] It was hot and heavy. He then turned his head towards me and looked at me,” the young man said.

Even after ramming their U-Haul into the vehicle in front of them, the two men still had not settled the reptile’s account.

“I put the handbrake on, and we put our feet up on the seat. At first I thought about throwing him out the window, getting him out of the car, but then I realized we were in Manhattan. There was nowhere to leave it. There are pedestrians everywhere,” he explained.

So the driver called the police, but the two officers who responded said they “didn’t want to deal with the snake.”

Animal control officers eventually recovered the white, yellow-banded, three-foot-long reptile.
